Week 11: Graphic Designer

Milton Glaser

Milton Glaser was an American graphic designer who lived from June 26, 1929 to June 26, 2020. The I Love New York logo, the psychedelic Bob Dylan poster, and the logos for DC Comics, Stony Brook University, and Brooklyn Brewery are all examples of his work. In 1954, he co-founded Push Pin Studios and, with Clay Felker, co-founded New York magazine. In 1974, he founded Milton Glaser, Inc. Many museums around the world have included his work in exhibitions and have it in their permanent collections. He designed many posters, books, and architectural projects throughout the course of his long career. He earned several honors for his work, including President Barack Obama's National Medal of the Arts in 2009, which he was the first graphic designer to receive. Glaser was born in the Bronx, New York City, on June 26, 1929. Eugene and Eleanor (née Bergman), his parents, were Hungarian Jewish immigrants. The family lived in the Bronx, specifically in the South Bronx. His father ran a dry cleaning and tailoring company, and his mother was a stay-at-home mom. Before entering the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, Glaser pursued drawing lessons with artists Raphael and Moses Soyer. Reynold Ruffins, Seymour Chwast, Edward Sorel, and Milton Glaser formed Push Pin Studios in 1954 after graduating from the Cooper Union in New York City. Following his departure from Italy, Glaser joined the business. The Push Pin Monthly Graphic was first distributed to friends and clients in 1957. The work of the studio was anti-traditional, preferring reinvigorated versions of historical styles. Push Pin was managed by Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast for twenty years, during which time it became a guiding guide in the world of graphic design. The imprimatur of the artist, illustrator, and visual community at large was redefined and extended by the studio. In 1974, Glaser established his own design company, Milton Glaser Inc, and departed from Push Pin the next year. In 1983, Glaser and Walter Bernard formed a partnership and opened WBMG, a publication design company in New York City. More than 50 magazines, journals, and periodicals have been designed by WBMG around the world. Glaser designed and illustrated over 400 posters throughout his career. The Cooper Hewitt National Architecture Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem all have exhibits of his creations. His art has also been seen in exhibitions around the world. In Paris, he had a one-man show at the Centre Georges Pompidou, and in New York City, he had a one-man show at the Museum of Modern Art. Glaser planned the Trattoria Dell'Arte, a Shelly Fireman-owned Italianate eatery right near Carnegie Hall, in New York City in 1988. Milton Glaser was the focus of the documentary film To Educate and Delight: The World of Milton Glaser, which was released in 2008. In 2019, The New York Times published a tribute to Glaser, who was still employed at the age of 90. On his 91st birthday, June 26, 2020, Glaser died in New York City of a stroke and renal failure.
